Web Tips for your next project

Hot Content
The main thing to consider when creating good content for your site is to make it appealing to your target audience. Of course this now means that you must know who your target audience is first. You should think carefully about what people coming to your site will be looking for and be very specific about this - for example if your creating a snowboard site will it be for novice boarders or advanced riders, will they be based at home or internationally, will they be competitors or just social boarders.

Smooth Navigation
Always ensure that users have a clear idea of what lies beneath each of the navigation links coming off of your home page. The links on your home page need to direct users to the most important content on your site, giving them a good idea of what the whole site contains, and the main navigation area should be housed in a prominent place, ideally directly next to the main body of your page. Avoid placing horizontal nav bars above rectangular logos or banners because they often go unnoticed by visitors-a phenomenom dubbed banner blindness' by usability don Jacob Neilsen.

Page Layout
The key consideration when putting together the text and images for your site is to ensure that your pages load as quickly as possible. An Average surfer using a dial-up connection won't hang around waiting for a page to load for much more than 10 seconds, so you should make sure that your images are compressed or optimized for faster loading. You'll find that any image editing application worth it's salt, such as Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro will have a bevy of tools for optimizing your graphics. It is also important to keep flashy graphics and special effects to a minimum, because these can slow down your site drastically and anoy your visitors at the same time.
